1995, Prologue by Antoni Simon i Tarrés, 370 pp. Ferran Soldevila (Barcelona, 1894-1971) is one of the main Catalan contemporary historians and one of the most remarkable intellectuals in the 20th century Catalonia. His Història de Catalunya is still regarded as the best synthesis ever made by a single person of our history. Therefore, it is no surprising that the work were considered by Joan Fuster the best approach to the Catalan past ever written. Although Soldevila is mainly known by its facet as historian, his works developed within many different fields, such as poetry, journalism, drama, novels…According to him all these activities helped define himself and he would feel mutilated if any of them were cut off from his personality. In this sense, Pujol cares about the plural character of Soldevila's works, although the maximum attention is paid to the analysis of the role played by Soldevila's historic works in the building of the Catalan contemporary historiography. It is not the objective of the author to write a conventional biography of Soldevila, but rather an "intellectual portrait" able to deep into the origins of his work. Likewise, Pujol attempts to show the relationship between his written production and the historic period in which he lived, since Soldevila was a committed citizen and provided proof of this all his life. |
